Learning about mountain walking
There are three components to learning about how to make mountain walking safe and enjoyable for yourself and for groups.
|
1. Read a good book. The standard text is 'Mountaincraft and Leadership' by Eric Langmuir. It covers navigation, hillwalking, campcraft, weather, first-aid, group leadership, security on steep ground and when crossing rivers or snow/ice areas. Its also pretty handy on rope technique, snow shelters and how not to get struck by lightening. |
|
2. Go on a course. The UK Mountain Leader Training Board run a range of courses from Summer Walking (easy walking in non-mountainous regions) through to Winter Mountain Leading (mountain walking in winter conditions). These courses tell you what you need to know to be safe up mountains and can lead to qualifications in mountain leading. You will definately need a qualification if you plan to lead groups of under-18s. You also can't go wrong with a good first-aid qualification - prefereably one that focuses on mountain first-aid.
3. Get some experience. Walk with others or on your own to gain experience.
4. Use these mini-tutorials.
